Your gift matters

The University of Birmingham is founded on a strong tradition of charitable support. From its conception, when Joseph Chamberlain set up the University, philanthropic support has been crucial in helping to build the University we know today.

Donations from alumni throughout the last century have played a vital role in transforming the University and the lives of the students who have attended. Today the University of Birmingham Fund performs a vital role in supporting students and continuing this rich history of philanthropy.

"I wanted to give back to the University because like a lot of other alumni, I received not only a good education from Birmingham, but I also had a look at life .." (John Stradling, graduated in 1968)

Thanks to the generosity of thousands of alumni like John, the Fund has now raised over £1 million. The Fund provides a flexible source of annual income that can be distributed to a wide range of projects that ensure considerable and immediate improvements to the lives of our students.

Each year, the money we've raised through gifts from our alumni is distributed via a Distribution Committee. The Committee always has at least one  member of our alumni present. The funds raised are awarded to a variety of small-scale projects which would not have been funded through any other means.

Alumni can give generally to the University of Birmingham Fund or choose to designate their gift to one of five Fund areas that interests them:

  • Teaching, Research and IT
  • Campus Environment and Facilities
  • The Guild of Students
  • University Sport Birmingham
  • Student Support
